The 78-year-old Kirsch died on May 5 at her home in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein after a short illness. Deutsche Verlags-Anstalt (a Random House subsidiary) director Thomas Rathnow said German literature had lost "one of its most important, headstrong and poetically powerful voices." Ars Poetica published a selection of poems by Sarah Kirsch Krídla okna (The Wings of a Window) in the Slovak translation by Mila Haugová in 2006.
