Zenith

An escaped prisoner's mission was to free his fellow inmates but his appetite for power is stronger and the path to his longed-for liberation turns into a new kind of oppression. Zenith uses dance as a language to illustrate the power dynamics that have shaped the political landscape in recent decades, not only in Central Europe, but around the world. The film is choreographed by Slovak dancer Anton Lachky who has lived in Brussels for twenty years and where he runs the successful dance company Anton Lachky Company. As a choreographer, he has worked with many foreign companies in Iceland, Sweden, Finland and Italy.

The Substance

Who has never dreamed of a better version of themselves? Aging TV star Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) gets the chance to try a miracle substance that can make her younger, prettier and more perfect. But there's a catch, she must share her time. One week for her, one for her new self, Sue (Margaret Qualley). Every seven days. The perfect balance. Simple, isn't it? If you keep everything, what could happen? Director Coralie Fargeat's film is a pithy, sharp and shocking satire that rocked the Cannes Film Festival and took home the Best Screenplay prize.

Lapili

From sea currents and dark caves to volcanic deserts. Lapilli is an intimate journey that cuts deep into the hard stuff. Wandering through diverse rocky landscapes, director Paula Ďurinová comes to terms with the sudden loss of her grandparents. The unexpected disappearance reveals a new horizon. The strings of an old autoharp sound in a ravine. This emerging ecosystem reveals phases of grief and a perspective full of empathy for minerals and life that no longer exist.

I am not yet who I want to be

Libuše Jarcovjáková is a legend of world photography and an unbridled woman who defied all conventions. Her life is a mosaic of fascinating encounters and wild stories – from the gritty underground of communist Czechoslovakia to exclusive photo shoots for the fashion set in Tokyo, to her dramatic escape to West Berlin, where she witnessed the fall of the Iron Curtain. Thousands of analogue photographs and pages of personal diaries were transformed into a formally unique documentary directed by Klára Tasovská, which thrilled audiences at the Berlinale and in Karlovy Vary.

The Test of Art

At the Academy of Fine Arts, as every year, there is an entrance talent test. Set in three different studios, the film follows the behind-the-scenes of the difficult task facing the local teaching staff: how to select from the crowd of applicants the chosen ones who will be given the opportunity to shape the visual arts in the years to come? How will the teachers themselves stand up to this test? The subject of the examination thus gradually becomes the art itself as well as its place in today's confusing world.

Janžurka

A personal, funny, touching and frank film that reveals the most important moments in the professional and private life of the important film and theatre actress Iva Janžurová. In this documentary portrait, Iva Janžurová - an icon of Czech film, television and theatre - is seen through the sensitive eyes of her daughter, documentary filmmaker Theodora Remundová. This closest possible relationship allows the director to move near her. This view reveals not only Iva Janžurová's admirable professional activity in the present, but also her past career and personal life in a contemporary context. The film had its world premiere at the Karlovy Vary IFF 2024 in the Returns to the Sources section.
